Blueberry Sod

Maine’s famous low-bush wild blueberries! An antioxidant super fruit with four season beauty! In addition to tasty berries, you get perky pink to white bell shaped flowers in May, blazing scarlet fall color and red twigs all winter. Blueberry makes a great accent or edging plant. Full sun, and acidic, well-drained soil is preferred. Will need maintenance. Zones 3-7.

Nothing is more exquisite than this lovely ground cover. It grows just to 3 inches tall and slowly spreads. Exotic, 2 inch whorled leaves which are dark-green and shiny in summer, become wine-red in the fall. Charming 4-point white flowers from late spring to summer, followed by scarlet berries in the fall. Bunchberry is still used today in some preserves and sauces. Partial sun/moderate shade, moist soil preferred. Zones 2-6.


Huckleberry

A deciduous shrub often in dry areas. Grows to about 1-3 feet in height. Huckleberry is a great ground cover for thin, rocky woods, and is often found on ledges. The berries are black and are the most delicious of its family, even sweeter than a blueberry! White to pink flowers blossom in the spring with an excellent fall display from orange to crimson. Plant in partial shade to full sun; wet, moist or dry soils will work. Attracts birds and other wildlife with berries & cover. Zones 5-9.


Wintergreen Sod

Dense creeping ground cover that spreads by underground stems. Forms a creeping mat about 6″ to 12″ high and 2′ to 3′ wide. Evergreen, glossy oval leaves turn reddish at the onset of cold weather. Small flowers are followed by long-lasting scarlet berries. Full to partial shade is best. Needs wet or moist soil. Moderate growth rate is to be expected. Zones 3.

A perfect plant to prevent erosion, it’s a very tough, fast spreading, lacy fern. It adapts to drier soil as well as damp soil. Fine textured, it has a fresh spring green color. It is a medium grower to about 15″ and is from the Bracken Fern family. The crushed fronds do actually have the scent of fresh hay! The golden fall color is a bonus. Zones 3-8.


New York Ferns

A light and bright yellow-green fern that grows about 12″ tall, with fronds about 4″ across. The fine lacy texture is characteristic of the Maiden Fern family. The lower and upper leaflets are tapered with a lighter colored stalk than the Hay-Scented Fern. Partial sun preferred. Zones 4-8.

A fast growing shrub, with a growth rate of 1′ to 3′ per year, also known as Kalmia angustifolia. With saucer shaped pink blooms, this shrub looks great planted around homes or buildings. The leaves range from a green to red depending on the time of year. Zones 5-8.

Always an eye catcher and easily recognized. this big bold fern can grow up to 3′ tall. The unfurling fronds and stems have an appealing, rich wooly coating as they emerge from the ground in the spring. They grow in moist woodland, bogs, peatlands, thickets, swamps, ditches and stream banks. Prefers moderate shade. Zones 1-11.

An elegant and symmetrical fern with ostrich feather shaped fronds, this vase-shaped fern has broad fronds near the tips and tapers back down to the crown. Plant in filtered sun to full shade. Since this fern likes moist, shaded areas, it’s great to use around wet areas of your landscape. Zones 3-7.

This evergreen fern has rich leathery green leaves that grow in bouquet-like clusters all year long. It grows about 2′-3′ tall and prefers humus-rich, loamy soil. Moist but well drained soil with part to full sun is best. Easy to grow, and spread well in good conditions, also great for planters through the winter. Zones 3-9.

From the Royal Fern Family, this large deciduous fern had leathery leaves. One to six of the leaflets at mid-stem on a few of the fronds will become a fertile spore cluster, therefore interrupting the pattern of leaflets on the frond stem. Height will vary by age. This fern likes moderate shade and moist to dry soil. Zones 2-8.

The needle-like appearance of this moss doesn’t reflect the softness of it when you run your hand across it! With no true root system it requires nothing more than a firm soil bed in a location with adequate shade, acidic soil and moisture to flourish. Growth of about 1/2″ to 3″ can be expected. Zones 2-15.

A versatile, low growing moss with a high transplant success rate. Sheet moss thrives in shade, but will tolerate partial sunlight as long as there is no direct afternoon sun. A vibrant medium green that looks as ground cover between stepping stones, patio stones, and other light traffic areas. Zones 3-11.
