2010 Cooperator of the Year!

Today we are excited to share that we will be receiving  the 2010 Cooperator of the Year award given by the Oxford County Soil and Water Conservation District!   Our nomination came from our local Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) office.  We will receive this award at the next Board of Supervisors annual meeting.  The award is given to those land users who show outstanding commitment to soil and water conservation on their farm.  Our quality and diversity of products have been the keys to our success. It is a GREAT day to be on the farm!

Not only is this day’s beauty one for the record books but we also decided to make it the start to our 2010 potato harvest!  Everyone was all smiles as we put the windrower and harvester to work.  This time of year we usually start by digging small sections for specific orders.  It allows us to work out the kinks in the equipment and break the warehouse packaging crew in slowly.  Ahead of our harvester a windrower digs 4 rows of potatoes and deposits them among the 4 rows that the harvester is set up to dig.  This allows the harvester to pick up the a total 8 rows with each pass...

Organics – 2009 and beyond!

Here at Green Thumb we are entering our second year of organic farming. For 2009 we have dedicated our entire Webster field to organic growing methods. Organic crops produced will include organic Dark Red Norland potatoes, organic Caribe potatoes, and Jacob’s Cattle dry beans. We will also be offering transitionally grown Yukon Gold potatoes. Transitional means that our Yukons will be grown with organic methods on ground that is not yet certified organic.
