A New Season, A New Generation

At this time of the year when the snow melts and the fields begin to dry up our crew’s internal clock goes off because it’s time to get back outside.  Every day brings the hope of being the day.  For the potato, corn and bean crews it is the start of planting season; for the turf crew it is the beginning of harvesting season. Spring Has Sprung…

Spring has sprung the landscaping bug in these parts, we have been fielding calls all morning with inquiries for Turf!  Soon there will be green grass everywhere.  Did you know the best times of year to install Turf are Spring and Fall?  The grass roots in a strip of sod follow the path of water into the soil.  This makes irrigation crucial when introducing  the roots to the new ground below.  During Spring and Fall water evaporates less quickly with cooler temperatures allowing the process to take place more efficiently.  Summer is not out of the question when considering a Turf...

Sod Season Has Come To An End…

The day after Thanksgiving brought a storm to the Northeast and blanketed us in snow which forced a close to the Sod season for Green Thumb Farms.  The harvester has taken up residence in the shop and will undergo a winter tune up.  We will be dreaming of Spring while we work away and we will keep our fingers crossed for another great season in 2011.  Until then enjoy these photos of lush, green Kentucky bluegrass and keep in mind that Spring is one of the best times to install sod due to cool nights and moist soil conditions.

Turf cutting has begun!
