It’s Harvest Time and We’re on Fire!
The dawn of autumn is the time when our farm comes full circle. That’s because it’s potato time! Our farm crew who work year-round doing everything “potato” kick into full gear, ready and excited to see what our carefully-tended crop yields. It’s so exciting to think about the bounty just under the surface of our fields that stretch across the Saco River valley of Fryeburg, Maine and Conway, New Hampshire. Everybody here gets excited, from our potato-growers to our seasonal employees who man the trucks that move alongside our harvesters, to the warehouse crew, to the salespeople, to those of...

It’s turf season and we’re knee-deep in it! Our Saco River Valley turf flies out of here at this time of year and in all the excitement, it’s easy to miss the quieter activity on the farm. In particular, our potato crop is in active growth now, blanketing the fields in rich dark green while the tubers gather in the goodness of our carefully tended soil. What I see growing out there in the fields are among nature’s most perfect foods. Honestly, it’s an honor to be able to grow them. I know I’ve gone on about the amazing health properties of potatoes before and I can assure you that I will...

I’m sure I have mentioned this before, but one of my favorite perks of working at Green Thumb Farms is taste testing! Whether it is taste testing fries for quality assurance, testing new varieties, or sampling a new recipe you can bet I will be the first to show up with fork in hand! We are lucky enough to have a trained chef on staff that is always willing to work out a new recipe for any situation. Today’s project was two-fold, a little research and development for an exciting new product line and sample recipes to accompany it. We are still in the early stages of our R&D, but I...

I have to admit there may have been a time or two when I let my potatoes spout, shameful I know. Either they got buried in the closet, I didn’t take the time to store them properly or life just got in the way and I never got around to cooking them. If you’re anything like me it pains you throw out food, especially produce. Well, have no fear there is still a fun use for those potatoes…potato stamps! This is not just for kids either, I have seen some pretty neat projects made by adults with the help of our little tubers! Supplies Needed: Large potatoes (1 potato for every two designs you’d...

A little snow and rain didn’t slow us down! Yesterday’s weather certainly left a little something to be desired, but the crew pushed forward on an exciting new project! To better accommodate our crop and provide storage throughout the year we’ve decided to add a fourth storage building to our facility. The new building will have a state-of-the-art temperature control system. This system will allow us to constantly monitor and adjust the storage environment and make sure the potatoes remain in optimum storage conditions. To us, the building represents more than just another place to...

At this time of the year when the snow melts and the fields begin to dry up our crew’s internal clock goes off because it’s time to get back outside. Every day brings the hope of being the day. For the potato, corn and bean crews it is the start of planting season; for the turf crew it is the beginning of harvesting season. You can just feel the excitement and anticipation. One of the best parts of a family farm is passing that excitement on to the next generation. Just the other day my husband took our son on a scouting mission with him, and I’m not sure which one of them was more...
